Highly efficient suppression of zincate ion crossover in zinc–air batteries using selective membrane PVA-KOH/ZIF-8 gel polymer electrolytes

Rechargeable zinc–air batteries have attracted considerable attention in the industries due to their high energy density, affordability, and safety. However, these batteries still have limitations in their lifetime because of the issue of zincate ion (Zn(OH)42−) crossover. To suppress this issue, a new PVA-KOH-based gel polymer electrolyte membrane incorporating zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles was developed as a selective membrane. The influence of different-sized ZIF-8 nanoparticles synthesized with three different zinc salts on thermal, physical, and electrochemical properties was investigated. The PVA-KOH/ZIF-8 membrane significantly reduced the diffusion coefficient of zincate ions to 3.27 × 10−6, 2.01 × 10−6, and 1.99 × 10−6 cm2 min−1 by the incorporation of ZIF-8, synthesized with Zn(NO3)2, Zn(OAc)2, and ZnSO4, respectively. Because of the pore apertures of ZIF-8 that are equivalent to Zn(OH)42−, the PVA-KOH/ZIF-8 selective membrane could block Zn(OH)42−and allowed OH− to pass through the membrane. Moreover, a large external hydrophilic surface was achieved by the influence of smaller-sized particles, which improved the retention of electrolytes. As a result, the ionic conductivity of the PVA-KOH/ZIF-8 membrane increased up to 164.27 mS cm−1 when added 10 wt% ZIF-8, synthesized by ZnSO4. Furthermore, this membrane showed the highest value of battery life cycle of 89 cycles at a current density 10 mA cm−2 and the discharge capacity of 396 mAh g−1. These results indicated that the development of a PVA-KOH/ZIF-8 membrane has a high potential and suitability for use as a new class of separators in rechargeable zinc–air batteries.

Optimization of the Synthesis and Radiolabeling of ZIF-8 Nanoparticles

Background: Lately, there has been increasing interest in the benefits of metal-organic frameworks, and among them, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF - 8) stand out as one of the most commonly employed systems owing to their unique characteristics. Objectives: Given that properties like particle size play a key role in biomedical applications of nanoparticles, optimizing the synthesis conditions becomes crucial. Additionally, it is essential to label these nanoparticles to track them effectively within the body. Methods: Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks nanoparticles were synthesized under various conditions, including high and room temperature, using two different solvents: Water and methanol. Modifications were made to the reaction temperature and the ratio of reactants to improve the outcomes. Particle size and size distribution were assessed in all conditions. Additionally, the radiolabeling of nanoparticles was examined using four different methods to identify the method with the highest efficiency and radiochemical purity. Results: The optimum conditions for ZIF-8 synthesis were determined at 50°C using methanol as the solvent. A reactant weight ratio of 1 : 2 (zinc nitrate to 2 - methylimidazole) was utilized. The most effective radiolabeling approach involved using tin chloride as a reducing agent, with the reaction mixture maintained at a temperature of 70°C for 30 minutes. Conclusions: In this study, the optimum conditions were successfully identified for synthesizing and labeling ZIF-8 nanoparticles. These nanoparticles have the potential to serve as effective carriers for diagnostic and therapeutic agents.

Multifunctional fucoidan-loaded Zn-MOF-encapsulated microneedles for MRSA-infected wound healing

Infected wound healing remains a challenging task in clinical practice due to several factors: (I) drug-resistant infections caused by various pathogens, (II) persistent inflammation that hinders tissue regeneration and (III) the ability of pathogens to persist intracellularly and evade antibiotic treatment. Microneedle patches (MNs), recognized for their effecacious and painless subcutaneous drug delivery, could greatly enhance wound healing if integrated with antibacterial functionality and tissue regenerative potential. A multifunctional agent with subcellular targeting capability and contained novel antibacterial components, upon loading onto MNs, could yield excellent therapeutic effects on wound infections. In this study, we sythesised a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) loaded with low molecular weight fucoidan (Fu) and further coating by hyaluronic acid (HA), obtained a multifunctional HAZ@Fu NPs, which could hinders Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) growth and promotes M2 polarization in macrophages. We mixed HAZ@Fu NPs with photocrosslinked gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and loaded it into the tips of the MNs (HAZ@Fu MNs), administered to mice model with MRSA-infected full-thickness cutaneous wounds. MNs are able to penetrate the skin barrier, delivering HAZ@Fu NPs into the dermal layer. Since cells within infected tissues extensively express the HA receptor CD44, we also confirmed the HA endows the nanoparticles with the ability to target MRSA in subcellular level. In vitro and in vivo murine studies have demonstrated that MNs are capable of delivering HAZ@Fu NPs deep into the dermal layers. And facilitated by the HA coating, HAZ@Fu NPs could target MRSA surviving at the subcellular level. The effective components, such as zinc ions, Fu, and hyaluronic acid could sustainably released, which contributes to antibacterial activity, mitigates inflammation, promotes epithelial regeneration and fosters neovascularization. Through the RNA sequencing of macrophages post co-culture with HAZ@Fu, the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis reveals that the biological functionalities associated with wound healing could potentially be facilitated through the PI3K-Akt pathway. The results indicate that the synergistic application of HAZ@Fu NPs with biodegradable MNs may serve as a significant adjunct in the treatment of infected wounds. The intricate mechanisms driving its biological effects merit further investigation.

Modified ZIF-8 Nanoparticles for Targeted Metabolic Treatment of Acute Spinal Cord Injury.

The activation of proinflammatory M1-type macrophages in the injured lesion accelerates the progression of a spinal cord injury (SCI). However, adverse side effects during systemic treatments targeting M1 macrophages have limited their applications. Nanoplatforms are novel carriers of traditional Chinese medicine because of their great efficiency to deliver and accumulation in the lesion. Herein, we synthesized a modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoplatform for internalization and accumulation in the injured spinal cord and effective administration for SCI. In vitro and in vivo experiments suggested that Prussian blue and Schisandrin B modified ZIF-8 effectively accumulated in M1 macrophages, inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS), and polarized the macrophage from proinflammatory M1 to anti-inflammatory M2 for rapid tissue infiltration by reprogramming the metabolic macrophages phenotype. This nanoplatform achieves a synergistic therapeutic effect of immunomodulation and neuroprotection, thereby shedding new light on the application of ZIF-8, and provides great potential for SCI.

Unexpectedly High Propylene/Propane Separation Performance of Asymmetric Mixed-Matrix Membranes through Additive-Assisted In Situ ZIF-8 Filler Formation: Experimental and Computational Studies.

Zeolitic-imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), composed of a zinc center tetrahedrally coordinated with 2-methylimidazolate linkers, has garnered extensive attention as a selective filler for propylene-selective mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). Recently, we reported an innovative and scalable MMM fabrication approach, termed "phase-inversion in sync with in situ MOF formation" (PIMOF), aimed at addressing the prevailing challenges in MMM processing. In this study, we intend to investigate the effect of additives, specifically sodium formate and 1,4-butanediol, on the modification of ZIF-8 filler formation within the polymer matrix in order to further improve the separation performance of the asymmetric MMMs prepared by the PIMOF. Remarkably, MMMs prepared with sodium formate as an additive in the coagulation bath exhibited an unprecedented C3H6/C3H8 separation factor of 222.5 ± 1.8 with a C3H6 permeance of 10.1 ± 0.3 GPU, surpassing that of MMMs prepared without additives (a C3 separation factor of 57.7 ± 11.2 with a C3 permeance of 22.5 ± 4.5 GPU). Our computational work complements the experimental investigation by studying the effect of ZIF-8 nanoparticle size on the specific surface interaction energy and apertures of ZIF-8. Calculations indicate that by having smaller ZIF-8 nanoparticles, stronger interactions are present with the polymer affecting the aperture of ZIF-8 nanoparticles. This reduction in aperture size is expected to improve selectivity toward propylene by reducing the permeability of propylene. These results represent a significant advancement, surpassing the performance of all previously reported propylene-selective MMMs and most high-quality polycrystalline ZIF-8 membranes. The notably enhanced separation performance primarily arises from the formation of exceedingly small ZIF-8-like particles with an amorphous or poorly crystalline structure, corroborated by our computational work.

‘Three Birds With One Stone’ functionalized metal–organic frameworks for facile and efficient chemiluminescent immunoassays

The luminol–H2O2 system is crucial in the field of chemiluminescence (CL) analysis. However, luminol exhibits improved solubility and luminescence only in an alkaline environment, and its preparation process is cumbersome. This inconvenience highlights the need for developing a simple and universally applicable method in this regard. This study integrates luminol and a catalyst into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for fabrication of functionalised MOF nanoparticles. Further, PEGylated hematin (PEG = polyethylene glycol) was prepared. This modification with PEG enhanced the catalytic properties of hematin and facilitated the formation of zeolitic imidazole framework-8 nanoparticles. Furthermore, the built-in catalyst enhanced the CL in terms of strength and persistence. These MOF nanoparticles were used as signal markers to fabricate a sandwich-type CL immunosensor for detection of carcinoembryonic antigen, which is a disease marker, following which highly satisfactory analytical test results are obtained. This approach of integrating luminophores and catalysts offers a new idea for generating novel materials in the CL analysis field.

Biologically produced and metal-organic framework delivered dual-cut CRISPR/Cas9 system for efficient gene editing and sensitized cancer therapy

Manipulation of the lactate metabolism is an efficient way for cancer treatment given its involvement in cancer development, metastasis, and immune escape. However, most of the inhibitors of lactate transport carriers suffer from poor specificity. Herein, we use the CRISPR/Cas9 system to precisely downregulate the monocarboxylate carrier 1 (MCT1) expression. To avoid the self-repairing during the gene editing process, a dual-Cas9 ribonucleoproteins (duRNPs) system is generated using the biological fermentation method and delivered into cells by the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles, enabling precise removal of a specific DNA fragment from the genome. For efficient cancer therapy, a specific glucose transporter 1 inhibitor (BAY-876) is co-delivered with the duRNPs, forming BAY/duRNPs@ZIF-8 nanoparticle. ZIF-8 nanoparticles can deliver the duRNPs into cells within 1 h, which efficiently downregulates the MCT1 expression, and prohibits lactate influx. Through simultaneous inhibition of the lactate and glucose influx, BAY/duRNPs@ZIF-8 prohibits ATP generation, arrests cell cycle, inhibits cell proliferation, and finally induces cellular apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Consequently, we demonstrate that the biologically produced duRNPs delivered into cells by the nonviral ZIF-8 carrier have expanded the CRISPR/Cas gene editing toolbox and elevated the gene editing efficiency, which will promote biological studies and clinical applications. Statement of significanceThe CRISPR/Cas9 system, widely used as an efficient gene editing tool, faces a challenge due to cells’ ability to self-repair. To address this issue, a strategy involving dual-cutting of the genome DNA has been designed and implemented. This strategy utilizes biologically produced dual-ribonucleoproteins delivered by a metal-organic framework. The effectiveness of this dual-cut CRISPR-Cas9 system has been demonstrated through a therapeutic approach targeting the simultaneous inhibition of lactate and glucose influx in cancer cells. The utilization of the dual-cut gene editing strategy has provided valuable insights into gene editing and expanded the toolbox of the CRISPR/Cas-based gene editing system. It has the potential to enable more efficient and precise manipulation of specific protein expression in the future.

A rapid VEGF-gene-sequence photoluminescence detector for osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) has become a serious problem to the human society for years due to its high economic burden, disability, pain, and severe impact on the patient's lifestyle. The importance of current clinical imaging modalities in the assessment of the onset and progression of OA is well recognized by clinicians, but these modalities can only detect OA in the II stage with significant structural deterioration and clinical symptoms. Blood vessel formation induced by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) occurs in the early stage and throughout the entire course of OA, enables VEGF relating gene sequence to act as a biomarker in the field of early diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. Here in, a facile rapid detection of VEGF relating ssDNA sequence was developed, in which manganese-based zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoparticles (Mn-ZIF-NPs) were synthesized by a simple coprecipitation strategy, followed by the introduction and surficial absorption of probe ssDNAs and the CRISPR/Cas12a system components. Furthermore, fluorescence experiments demonstrated that the biosensor displayed a low detection limit of 2.49nM, a good linear response to the target ssDNA ranging from 10nM to 500nM, and the ability of distinguishing single nucleotide polymorphism. This finding opens a new window for the feasible and rapid detection of ssDNA molecules for the early diagnose of OA.

Ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon Ti3C2Tx-TiN heterostructure derived from ZIF-8 nanoparticles sandwiched MXene for high-performance capacitive deionization

Rational design of high-performance electrode materials is crucial for enhancing desalination performance of capacitive deionization (CDI). Here, ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon/Ti3C2Tx-TiN (NC/MX-TiN) heterostructure was developed by pyrolyzing zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles sandwiched MXene (ZSM), which were formed by assembling ultrafine ZIF-8 nanoparticles with size of 20 nm on both sides of MXene nanosheets. The introduction of ultrasmall ZIF-8 particles allowed for in situ nitridation of the MXene during pyrolysis, forming consecutive TiN layers tightly connected to the internal MXene. The two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure exhibited remarkable properties, including high specific surface area and excellent conductivity. Additionally, the resulting TiN demonstrated exceptional redox capability, which significantly enhanced the performance of CDI and ensured cycling stability. Benefiting from these advantages, the NC/MX-TiN exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 45.6 mg g−1 and a steady cycling performance in oxygenated saline water over 50 cycles. This work explores the rational design and construction of MXene-based 2D heterostructure and broadens new horizons for the development of novel CDI electrode materials.

ZIF-8 Nanoparticle: A Valuable Tool for Improving Gene Delivery in Sperm-Mediated Gene Transfer

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with unique characteristics that make them well-suited for drug delivery and gene therapy applications. Among the MOFs, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has emerged as a promising candidate for delivering exogenous DNA into cells. However, the potential of ZIF-8 as a vector for sperm-mediated gene transfer (SMGT) has not yet been thoroughly explored.This investigation aimed to explore the potential of ZIF-8 as a vector for enhancing genetic transfer and transgenesis rates by delivering exogenous DNA into sperm cells. To test this hypothesis, we employed ZIF-8 to deliver a plasmid expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) into mouse sperm cells and evaluated the efficiency of DNA uptake. Our findings demonstrate that ZIF-8 can efficiently load and deliver exogenous DNA into mouse sperm cells, increasing GFP expression in vitro. These results suggest that ZIF-8 is a valuable tool for enhancing genetic transfer in SMGT, with important implications for developing genetically modified animals for research and commercial purposes. Additionally, our study highlights the potential of ZIF-8 as a novel class of vectors for gene delivery in reproductive biology.Overall, our study provides a foundation for further research into using ZIF-8 and other MOFs as gene delivery systems in reproductive biology and underscores the potential of these materials as promising vectors for gene therapy and drug delivery.

Manganese Dioxide Nanoplatform with a Hollow Rhombic Dodecahedron Morphology for Drug Delivery.

Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is considered as a promising drug carrier material suitable for the tumor microenvironment while lacking conducive structures for drug loading. Herein, we construct a MnO2 nanoplatform with a hollow rhombic dodecahedral morphology for drug delivery. In this work, we obtained zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoparticles (ZIF-90 NPs) via a coordination reaction. Furthermore, the drug-loading nanoparticles (ZIF-90/DOX NPs) were obtained by Schiff's base reaction and then selected as a sacrificial template to obtain the hollow nanoplatforms (ZIF-90@MnO2 NPs). Moreover, the photothermal effect and multiresponsive drug release behaviors were revealed by loading the photothermal agent IR-820 and the anticancer drug doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). Our study demonstrates that the ZIF-90@MnO2 NPs loaded with photosensitizers exhibited excellent photothermal conversion performance. Benefiting from the hollow structure and redox activity, remarkable drug loading and release performances of ZIF-90@MnO2 NPs were achieved. It is shown that ZIF-90@MnO2 NPs achieved a satisfactory drug-loading efficiency (up to ca. 69.7%) for DOX. More promisingly, the ZIF-90@MnO2 NPs exhibited significant glutathione (GSH)/pH-responsive drug release and degradation performances. Overall, this work highlights the potential of controlled drug release of nanocarriers and offers unique insights into the design of nanocarriers with hollow structures.

Hypoxia-activated cascade nanovaccine for synergistic chemoembolization-immune therapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

In this work, a promising treatment strategy for triggering robust antitumor immune responses in transarterial chemoembolization of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is presented. The zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoparticles loaded with hypoxia-activated prodrug tirapazamine and immune adjuvant resiquimod facilitated in situ generation of nanovaccine via a facile approach. The nanovaccine can strengthen the ability of killing the liver cancer cells under hypoxic environment, while was capable of improving immunogenic tumor microenvironment and triggering strong antitumor immune responses by increasing the primary and distant intratumoral infiltration of immune cells such as cytotoxic T cells. Moreover, a porous microcarrier, approved by FDA as pharmaceutical excipient, was designed to achieve safe and effective delivery of the nanovaccine via transarterial therapy in rabbit orthotopic VX2 liver cancer model. The microcarrier exhibited the characteristics of excellent drug loading and occlusion of peripheral artery. The collaborative delivery of the microcarrier and nanovaccine demonstrated an exciting inhibitory effect on solid tumors and tumor metastases, which provided a great potential as novel combination therapy for HCC interventional therapy.

A new era in cancer treatment: harnessing ZIF-8 nanoparticles for PD-1 inhibitor delivery.

This review delves into the potential of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles in augmenting the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy, with a special focus on the delivery of programmed cell death receptor 1 (PD-1) inhibitors. The multifunctional nature of ZIF-8 nanoparticles as drug carriers is emphasized, with their ability to encapsulate a range of therapeutic agents, including PD-1 inhibitors, and facilitate their targeted delivery to tumor locations. By manipulating the pore size and surface characteristics of ZIF-8 nanoparticles, controlled drug release can be realized. The strategic use of ZIF-8 nanoparticles to deliver PD-1 inhibitors presents a precise and targeted modality for cancer treatment, reducing off-target impacts and enhancing therapeutic effectiveness. This combined strategy addresses the existing challenges and constraints of current immunotherapy techniques, with the ultimate goal of enhancing patient outcomes in cancer therapy.

Mechanical properties and glass transition temperature of metal-organic framework-filled epoxy resin: A molecular dynamics study

The effect of ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8) nanoparticles on the mechanical properties of thermoset epoxy-based nanocomposite is investigated using molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. To investigate the effect of the force field type on the results, the mechanical properties and glass transition temperature (Tg) of pure EPON862-TETA polymer were compared at various temperatures using UFF and COMPASS force fields. The results showed that the COMPASS force field provided better simulation results for systems containing polymers. To investigate the effect of ZIF-8 nanoparticle and its size, three simulation boxes were constructed containing cross-linked epoxy resin and ZIF-8 with different sizes while maintaining a weight ratio of 90:10. The mechanical properties and glass transition temperature were calculated for the epoxy/ZIF-8 nanocomposite. The results indicated that adding ZIF-8 nanoparticles improves the Tg, as well as Young's modulus, bulk modulus, and shear modulus at different temperatures compared to the pure epoxy resin.

Acute toxicity of nanoscale zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) to saltwater planktonic species Artemia salina and Nannochloropsis oculata.

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles (ZIF-8 NPs) are metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that have gained significant attention in various fields due to their unique properties. They have potential applications in drug delivery, gas storage, and catalysis. However, their increasing use raises concerns about their potential environmental impact. Our study evaluates the effects of ≈90nm ZIF-8 NPs in two planktonic species, the green microalga Nannochloropsis oculata and the brine shrimp Artemia salina. After synthesis and characterization (SEM, EDS, BET, and DLS) of nanoporous ZIF-8 NPs, a growth inhibition test on microalgae (72h) and acute immobilization test on instar I and II of Artemia nauplii (48h) were conducted following, OECD 201 and ISO/TS 20787, respectively. The toxicity of ZIF-8 NPs to both species was time- and concentration-dependent. The 72-h median inhibitory concentration (IC50) of ZIF-8 NPs for N. oculata based on average specific growth rate and yield were calculated as 79.71 ± 8.55mg L-1 and 51.73 ± 5.16mg L-1, respectively. Also, the 48-h median effective concentration (EC50) of ZIF-8 NPs on immobilization rate of instar I and II were calculated as 175.09 ± 4.14mg L-1 and 4.69 ± 0.34mg L-1, respectively. Moreover, the swimming type of non-immobilized animals was affected by ZIF-8 NPs. These findings provide a good insight into the toxicity of nanoparticulate ZIF-8 to saltwater planktons and also confirm that instar II Artemia is more sensitive than instar I. This study demonstrated that ZIF-8 NPs, despite all their advantages, could have toxic effects on aquatic organisms. More studies are required to assess their potential environmental impact and develop strategies to mitigate their toxicity.

3D printing of MOF-reinforced methacrylated gelatin scaffolds for bone regeneration

Scaffolds based on gelatin (Gel) play a crucial role in bone tissue engineering. However, the low mechanical properties, rapid biodegradation rate, insufficient osteogenic activity and lacking anti-infective properties limit their applications in bone regeneration. Herein, the incorporation of ibuprofen (IBU)-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) in a methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) matrix was proposed as a simple and effective strategy to develop the IBU-ZIF-8@GelMA scaffolds for enhanced bone regeneration capacity. Results indicated that the IBU-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles with tiny particle sizes were uniformly distributed in the GelMA matrix of the IBU-ZIF-8@GelMA scaffolds, and the IBU-loaded ZIF-8 growing in the scaffolds enabled the controlled and sustained releasing of Zn2+ and IBU in pH = 5.5 over a long period for efficient bone repair and long-term anti-inflammatory activity. Furthermore, the doping of the IBU-loaded ZIF-8 nanoparticles efficiently enhanced the compression performance of the GelMA scaffolds. In vitro studies indicated that the prepared scaffolds presented no cytotoxicity to MC3T3-E1 cells and the released Zn2+ during the degradation of the scaffolds promoted MC3T3-E1 cell osteogenic differentiation. Thus, the drug-loaded ZIF-8 modified 3D printed GelMA scaffolds demonstrated great potential in treating bone defects.

Enhancing Bone Regeneration through CDC20-Loaded ZIF-8 Nanoparticles Wrapped in Erythrocyte Membranes with Targeting Aptamer.

In the context of bone regeneration, nanoparticles harboring osteogenic factors have emerged as pivotal agents for modulating the differentiation fate of stem cells. However, persistent challenges surrounding biocompatibility, loading efficiency, and precise targeting ability warrant innovative solution. In this study, a novel nanoparticle platform founded upon the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) is introduced. This new design, CDC20@ZIF-8@eM-Apt, involves the envelopment of ZIF-8 within an erythrocyte membrane (eM) cloak, and is coupled with a targeting aptamer. ZIF-8, distinguished by its porosity, biocompatibility, and robust cargo transport capabilities, constitutes the core framework. Cell division cycle protein 20 homolog (CDC20) is illuminated as a new target in bone regeneration. The eM plays a dual role in maintaining nanoparticle stability and facilitating fusion with target cell membranes, while the aptamer orchestrates the specific recruitment of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) within bone defect sites. Significantly, CDC20@ZIF-8@eM-Apt amplifies osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs via the inhibition of NF-κB p65, and concurrently catalyzes bone regeneration in two bone defect models. Consequently, CDC20@ZIF-8@eM-Apt introduces a pioneering strategy for tackling bone defects and associated maladies, opening novel avenues in therapeutic intervention.

A versatile polyphenol-coordinated eco-friendly hollow ZIF-based nanohybrid for precise fungicide delivery and highly efficient suppression of Botrytis cinerea

Considerable attention has been focused on the development of smart and environmentally friendly nano-pesticides that can respond to environmental stimuli, to enhance pesticide utilization while mitigating environmental risks. In this study, boscalid (Bos), a potent fungicide, was loaded into hollow zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanoparticles (HZNs) and coordinated with tannic acid (TA) to fabricate a pH-responsive nanohybrid platform (Bos@HZNs@TA). Results demonstrated that the HZNs@TA carriers possessed a distinct rhombic dodecahedral morphology and enhanced hydrophilic properties. The loading capacity of Bos in HZNs@TA was approximately 38.43%. Bos@HZNs@TA exhibited excellent adhesion to tomato leaves and washout resistance. Notably, the release amount of Bos from Bos@HZNs@TA at pH = 5.5 reached 84.6%, which was higher than that at neutral pH conditions for 72 h. The pH-responsive release characteristics of Bos@HZNs@TA was advantageous for its response to the acidic microenvironment created by Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea). Additionally, Bos@HZNs@TA demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in controlling B. cinerea, surpassing the commercial Bos suspension concentrate. Importantly, Bos@HZNs@TA had no discernible adverse effects on the three non-target organisms, implying a good biocompatibility. This study provides a smart, eco-friendly, and sustainable approach to control B. cinerea effectively for plant protection.

Near-infrared light and pH-responsive hyaluronic acid-enveloped ZIF-8 nanoparticles for the treatment of pneumonia caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

There is a serious threat to public health posed by the rapid spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Photodynamic sterilization is the most effective method of combating bacterial infection, especially multidrug-resistant bacterial infection. In this study, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles, one of the most attractive metal–organic framework material, were used to encapsulate the indocyanine green (ICG, a potent PS); after that, hyaluronic acid (HA) coating was applied to the nanoparticle to create a host cell-tracking nanoplatform (ICG@ZIF-8/HA). Upon near-infrared light irradiation, ICG@ZIF-8/HA exhibit excellent efficacy in producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and killing multidrug-resistant bacteria in vitro. After the tail vein injection, ICG@ZIF-8/HA can precisely deliver to lung infection sites, and display an effective PDT-based elimination of multidrug-resistant bacteria in mouse lung infection models. These results suggest that the ICG@ZIF-8/HA nanoplatform may exhibit potent curative effects on infectious diseases.
